About the Acer Palmatum 'Katsura':
Variety: Acer Palmatum 'Katsura', Katsura Japanese Maple
Full Size: Typically grows to around 4.5 metres high in about 15 years, forming a vigorous, upright small tree with a balanced canopy.
Foliage: Deciduous. One of the earliest to leaf out, opening in bright orange and yellow tones, maturing to green through summer, then finishing deep orange to red in autumn.
Why Choose the Acer Palmatum Katsura?
Key Features:
• One of the first Japanese Maples to leaf out in spring, so it kicks off the season early with a bright orange and yellow flush that stands out immediately in the garden.
• Strong colour progression across the year, spring starts warm and bright, summer settles to clean green, then autumn builds into deep orange and red tones.
• A vigorous upright grower that becomes a proper feature tree without needing decades to look established, ideal when you want height and presence in a reasonable timeframe.
• Great for contrast planting, it pairs beautifully with dark evergreens, conifers, and deep red maples, and it lifts shaded garden areas with its lighter spring tones.
• Handles sun to part shade in cooler Australian regions, with the best foliage quality in a position that is protected from hot, drying winds and harsh afternoon sun.
• Because it leafs out early, it can be more exposed to late frosts than later leafing varieties, so a sheltered spot is ideal in frost prone locations.
