About the Carpinus Betulus 'Fastigiata':
Variety: Carpinus Betulus 'Fastigiata' – Fastigiate Hornbeam (also known as Upright European Hornbeam)
Full Size: Typically reaches 8 metres tall and 3 metres wide, forming a narrow, columnar shape in youth that broadens slightly with age.
Foliage: Deciduous. Deep green serrated leaves turn bright yellow in autumn. Foliage clings well into winter, especially on young trees, offering screening even in dormancy.

Why Choose the Fastigiate Hornbeam?

Key Features:

  • Distinctly upright and formal in shape, making it ideal for narrow spaces, avenue plantings, or structured screening in modern or classic designs.

  • Provides a dense summer canopy and retains brown foliage into winter, extending privacy and seasonal interest even when dormant.

  • Extremely hardy and adaptable, coping well with cold winters, exposed sites, clay soils, and urban pollution across much of Australia.

  • Responds exceptionally well to clipping and shaping, making it perfect for pleaching, hedging, or formal topiary training.

  • Low maintenance and long-lived, offering year-round structure, shade, and architectural form with minimal care once established.
